The Beginning
I first started experimenting with electronics while I was in middle school. I got interested after my father bought me one of those electronics kits from Radio Shack. I soldered using a old wood burning set. In retrospect, I realize that I never really understood much of anything, but I did get to build a few interesting projects from magazine articles, and launched a successful career in software from the beginning Basic programming articles in my electronics magazines. The basic problem was a kid in middle school usually can't afford to buy parts, especially when the only place to buy them is Radio Shack.
